Corrections

What happens when something here is wrong.

Things published here are checked before they go up. That is not the same as being right, and the difference is the reason this page exists.

If you find a mistake

Tell me through the contact page. Be specific about which sentence and what is wrong with it. A correction that names the passage gets handled; one that says the piece is misleading in general usually does not, because I cannot act on it.

What happens next

A correction is not an edit. The piece goes back through the same process it went through the first time: the claim is rechecked against its source, the text is reviewed again, and a new version is approved before anything changes on the site.

The version you read stays up while that happens. Quietly swapping the text under a URL is how the record of what was said gets lost, and I would rather leave a wrong sentence visible for a day than pretend it was never there.

When the corrected version goes up, it carries a note saying what changed. Small fixes to spelling and links do not get a note. Anything that changes what the piece claims does.

What I will not do

I will not remove a piece because someone disagrees with it, and I will not quietly soften a claim that turns out to be inconvenient. If a claim was wrong it gets corrected in public. If it was right and unwelcome, it stays.
